I've decided to post my updates on wednesdays to pep me up for the remainder of the week. Yeah! Today I was introduced to Harbor hospital just south of LAX. My interns and residents are great. One of the chief residents stayed after to say that the reason he chose to do his residency there is because of the great teaching environment. That turned out to be true as I met more of my team.
During rounds I got PIMPed, the slang for "Put In My Place" by the attending doctor. Oooo, electrolytes and acid-base, the bane of my existence. Oh well, I learned about them afterward and put what he said to memory. Tomorrow I round with just him in the late morning so I'm sure I'll learn a lot.
I got my first patient today. He's being evaluated for difficulty swallowing. I got to take a history, do a physical, look up labs and studies on the computer. The real guts of medicine. It was great to get my hands on the real stuff finally.
I got home a bit early and decided to go to the gym. This turned out to be a mistake. I was rollerblading over when I got HIT BY A CAR 2 blocks from my house. I'm OK. Big bruise on my leg, but nothing else too bad. I got the **** scared out of me though. No more rollerblading for a while... I wish I lived where it was safer to rollerblade, bike, run, walk, or even drive. This place is so hectic.
